The Children's Library, located in downtown Akron on the second floor of the Akron-Summit County Public Library, is celebrating 100 years of serving children. An open house will be held Saturday Dec. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. to celebrate its dedication to children and the importance of reading.

According to the library's blog, the Children's Library formed in 1912 after a local businessman Frank H. Mason donated $2000 to the library to pay for books and hire a librarian. Four women from the Akron area each contributed $250, which was used to purchase furniture and open the Children's Corner in 1913. Since this time, the Children's Library has grown significantly and has continued to increase literacy and interest in reading among children in the community said Trish Saylor, the manager of the Children's Library.

"It's finding the right book for the right child and helping him or her discover a love for reading," Saylor said. "People remember this, and they are still readers today because of the guidance that we gave them as they were growing up."

The Children's Library hosts a number of programs for children from birth to 6th grade. These programs include Baby Tales, which happens every other month and Story Time, which takes place every Thursday and Saturday morning along with Sunday afternoons.

The Library also hosts Paws for Reading on the second Saturday of every month, where kids are given the opportunity to read and play with certified therapy dogs from the Sit Means Sit program, a dog training program based in the Cleveland-Akron area. Play areas have been increased and include a kitchen space, a train table and toys borrowed from the Toy Resource Center. The library provides outreach in local schools on the importance of reading and gives stories and book talks all throughout Summit County.

"I've gotten more vocal about telling parents it's very important everyday to turn off the TV and read with your child. It's one of the most important things you can do to get them ready for school," Saylor said, who has worked for the Akron Summit County Library for 31 years.

The open house on December 7 will host a variety of events from crafts to live music as well as a birthday cake. Earlier in the morning at 11 a.m., former Children's Library manager and librarians will be featured as guest storytellers. There will also be a special appearance from the library's mascot, Paws.

"I would love to invite people down to the open house and if anyone has memories of the Children's Library from any time in the past we'd love to hear what they are," Saylor said.
